Can Home Energy Meters Help You Save Money?
Let me tell you about a great tool that can help you measure how much electricity your home is consuming throughout the day. What I'm talking about are whole house energy meters. They can be a great tool to show you how much electricity you are using at any given moment as well as estimate how much electricity an appliance like a stove, dryer, water heater or dishwasher consume while operating. What you might find might inspire you to reconsider how you use and perhaps even how often you use certain appliances like dryers or dishwashers.

Knowledge Is Power
I know, that little ditty is so overdone. However, knowledge really is power when it comes to installing a whole house energy meter in your home. If you know how much you're using, then you can be inspired to look for ways to alter your habits or change your appliance use in order to reduce your energy consumption. For example, if the meter you decide to use has an easy to read display and you place it in an area where everyone in the family can view it, everyone becomes more conscious of how their consumption impacts the family budget for energy.
Some models of home energy meters can also estimate your monthly bill for you. This is useful because you can see how much simple or major changes are going to reduce your bill, rather than waiting until you actually receive it. If your utility charges you more for energy during certain hours of the day, many meters will also calculate your bill based on this information, after you provide the necessary information about your utility charges based on the time of day. If your utility uses tiered metering, charging you one rate for the first 1000 kilowatt hours you consume and a higher rate for the next 1000 kilowatt hours for example, then a home energy meter can take that information into account instead.
Knowing how much energy your appliances consume and how your use affects your electric bill can enable you to reduce your consumption over time. Of course, it always nice to be able to have an estimate of how much you owe your utility before they send you a bill. However, its even better if you see that you'll be paying less than you usually do!
