What's The Big Deal About Reusable Towels?

A roll or a pack of paper towels might not seem like a large expense. Individually, no, but if you were to add up how much you spend on paper towels over a year, it would be quite shocking. Lets say you use two rolls of paper towels in a week around your household. We'll just assume that we're buying the cheap store brand and $0.99 is how much we pay. That's just a hair over $2.00 we spend every week, after taxes of course. Now, there are 52 weeks in a year. Think about that. That's a minimum of $104 that you're paying just to purchase paper, use it to clean up some spill or clean your windows and then throw it away in the garbage. I like to use this same type of explanation with friends who smoke. Add up how much you're spending over the course of a year and it becomes very clear you could be saving a LOT of cash. Of course, if one were to quite smoking, you'd also be saving your health, but that's another story.

How Good Are Reusable Cloths?

Even if you buy your paper towels in multi-packs, you might be paying less on average per roll but you're still wasting your money. Of course, if you have a large family, you're going to be using more paper towels, that's a given. However, there is great potential to save even more money by switching from disposable paper towels to reusable cloth towels. There are many retailers online who offer these and even some stores may carry them locally. Some are made from rayon, a manufactured regenerated cellulose fiber, which comes from trees. Others use cotton, hemp or blends of synthetic and natural materials. The best cloths to purchase are ones that are made of woven material rather than sheets of synthetic material. Woven material can take more abuse and can therefore last longer than synthetic material that is not woven.

Most are very absorbent and can be wrung out and will dry in very little time. When they become soiled, simply wash them with your towels and wash cloths and they'll be ready to go again. They're a great way to reduce your carbon footprint as well. Because you'll be using fewer or no paper towels, you'll be reducing the number of trees cut down to produce paper towels. This means more trees to continue absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Of course, the best part is that the reusable cloths will more than pay for themselves until they finally wear out, possibly saving you hundreds of dollars and rolls of paper towels!

Thanks ithabise, I love using them around the house. My best friend just uses cheap white wash cloths to do most of the cleaning around her house, so that's a good alternative for people.

Absolutely. I'm happy to see this article. I practice this habit: saves me money and the environment the hassle. I also use cloth napkins instead of paper ones. I hope many people get the point.
